Monmouthshire County Council’s Planning Committee gave unanimous support for plans to create a new destination park in Chepstow this week.
The proposal put forward by volunteer group, Friends of the Dell Park Chepstow (FDPC), was approved by the Committee at their 6 February meeting. Some minor amendments were made to the application to ensure privacy for neighbouring properties.
Chepstow Town Council have backed the project, providing £100,000 towards the re-development. The group now need to match this contribution with Lottery funding so works can begin.
The new park will replace the current outdated play equipment in the Dell, creating a modern and more natural play environment in keeping with the historic Port Wall. Play boulders, accessible swings and a roundabout all feature in the designs. Inspiration has also been taken from Chepstow’s rich historic past, with the inclusion of a bespoke wooden boat and castle-themed slide running down the Dell’s embankment.
Commenting on the news, Sam Balloch, aged four from Chepstow, said: “I am so excited, I think the slide will be so much fun. I can’t wait to try all the new things!”
Vicky Burston-Yates, Chair of FDPC, said: “This is such a big milestone for the project and will really help support our application for the all-important Lottery funding. Thanks goes to everyone who has supported and backed this project so far, which is as much about creating an imaginative and safe play space for our children as it is about breathing new life into Chepstow’s beautiful town centre.
“Bagsy first go on the slide!”
Cllr Margaret Griffiths, Chepstow Town Mayor, said: “I attended the planning meeting and was delighted that the support from councillors across Monmouthshire was unanimous and they, like us, are looking forward to a new and exciting play park being built for the children of Chepstow and our visitors. The play park will be an essential element of a family day out in Chepstow.”
New 3D visuals of the proposed park are available to view on our plan page.
The volunteer group hope to submit an application for National Lottery funding in the coming months.
