Our plan
Our vision is to create a thriving destination park for all.
We want to transform the current outdated play area into a place our community, and those from further afield, want to spend time in. At the heart of our plan is the need to create an accessible, welcoming area that allows people to enjoy this treasured green space. Whether that be a place to sit and talk to friends... or to set sail on your make believe boat like the Severn Princess!
“This [new park] will encourage us into the town, where we are also more likely to visit other local businesses and attractions.”
- Member of the public, Family Festival
Creating an area that inspires imaginative and adventurous play for children is a key focus of our project. This in turn will have immeasurable benefits for children’s activity levels and wellbeing.
We also believe there will be many additional benefits; for example, an increase in time spent in the park and footfall around the town will bring a likely boost to local businesses.
We know there is strong community backing for our plans through the many conversations we’ve had and the survey responses we’ve received...
It's a park covering all age ranges which is not currently available in Chepstow. Also looks fab! | It offers more opportunities for children of all ages and would benefit everyone. | |
---|---|---|
It gives me a reason to stay longer in the town when I'm shopping with three kids in tow. | Of the use of natural materials. | |
It will be somewhere ALL the family can spend time together or apart within walking distance of home. The sooner the better! | It's fun and cool. | |
The children are excited about having an amazing place to meet friends and have fun after school. | It is right in the middle of the community in Chepstow and it is surrounded by greenery. |
So, how does this all translate into rejuvenating the Dell Park...?
We have been working with The Landmark Trust, a Bristol-based environmental consultancy to develop designs and concepts.
At the heart of the transformation will be a modern and more natural play environment, that will complement the historic port wall that runs alongside the park. New accessible play equipment will be installed for children under six and aged seven to 12.
New play equipment will likely include:
-
Bespoke wooden boat
-
Nest swing and toddler swings
-
Accessible roundabout
-
Play boulders
-
Balance trail.
Landscaping work will also be undertaken to provide a smooth and easily accessible pathway, a wildflower meadow and seating areas.
Plans have also been developed for the creation of a castle-themed slide running down the Dell's embankment. This would be installed as part of a later phase of development and subject to securing funding in addition to Chepstow Town Council's investment and our planned bid for Lottery funding.
A planning application for the work will soon be submitted to Monmouthshire County Council for consideration.
Take a look at the imagery below which provides visualisations of what the new park could look like - with thanks to The Landmark Practice for allowing us to publish this imagery and for all of their continued efforts in supporting our project.
The more extensive park layout and new images builds on the previous designs and artist impressions developed by The Landmark Practice, which for reference, can still be viewed on our original phase one visuals page.
